Where did October go?

Really, what happened to it? I have been totally MIA when it comes to my blogs. Scratch that, I managed a couple treasury posts on Tilt Treasures (creepy, spooky and devil), a create update on Tilt’s Creations and some Wordless Wednesdays. Wooppeee.
I would love to say that I have had so many orders coming in that I just could not tear myself away from the sewing machine. But alas, that was not the case. Nor was it anything exciting.
The first weekend of October I was down near Nashville visiting my brother & his family. It was my new nephew’s baptism. Ok, that is kind of a vacation. A vacation from my own family & home…I went with my parents while hubby stayed back with the kids who had school & stuff. It was great going down there – it was the 1st time since they moved last year. I brought my niece a little chef’s hat I made…I didn’t want her to feel left out.

It was nice to be home again though. Except being sick. Yes, I spent those first 2 weeks of the month under the weather. Nothing major, but enough to not want to do anything.
I did manage to make and list some new backpacks and handbags. I also have 3 out of 4 new purses finished. It has been so long since I’ve blogged I am not sure if I have showed off my newest batch of clutches either (in both my Artfire and Etsy shops).

I also went to the Bang to a Different Beat Fashion Show for breast cancer awareness in Flint one weekend. The models were sporting some really cool hairstyles by Summerset Salon. Crystal from Flint Handmade took some pics of my & my mom at my table & one of my fave hairdos…

I am hoping to get back into my normal blogging groove next week – or sooner. I have one more day to get my Etsyblogger of the month post up. I have been doing this at the end of the month anyway, so I don’t feel too far behind there.

Blending Filament for Special Effects

Blending filament again, and what a great find for a former dilemma! These Talavera pieces couldn’t take decorative stitches, but definitely needed something to jazz them up a bit for use as tree ornaments – especially with the bright and lively colors.

This little cross is a smaller version of one I’m showing on Freebies, as an example of how to make the change in size for a simpler project. The description of how I use blending filament for the most effect is on this blog in an earlier post.

Anyway, I have really liked this one, but didn’t want to undertake the big one right now, so had to “small it down” to stitch for myself.
I enjoy working on a bare canvas with only the outlines drawn – both because it’s like painting with needle and thread, and because I’m too lazy to paint one for myself. It keeps me going to watch the pattern emerge in color!

I’ve started the outline on this one in Kreinik navy 018HL, size 12 braid (for 18 mesh canvas). It gives a bit of sparkle and shine along with the DMC cotton floss I’ve chosen.

The floss colors are exactly the colors on the cross, and the blending filament fits right in. I’m calling the navy, white, and orange the “background” on this piece, so won’t use any sparkle with it – but the pattern elements definitely need the zing of some random sparkle and shine – hence the blending filament that won’t overwhelm it as a shinier thread would.

By not making the background sparklle, the design will show up better. I’m off now to stitch a bit, as the weather turned cooler, and I can enjoy some fine, hot tea. (a new package has arrived from Tea Embassy – one I’ve gotten rather addicted to is the Rooibos, and my favorite has just a hint of chocolate and mint. It’s yummy, and has no caffeine.)

Footnote: These Talavera crosses are available for sale at my Web Store, ELEGANT WHIMSIES – the link is on the side bar.

marshmallow skellies

In honor of the honor bestowed upon the decorated cookie today, here are some last minute Halloween marshmallows to add to my ghost and mummy repertoire: skeletons.

What honor you may ask? Why, Amy Atlas posted on my ghost and mummy marshmallows HERE. And if any of you reading this love to bake and/or love sweets of any kind and/or have ever tasted sugar and have somehow not have heard of Amy Atlas, I pray you leave my blog immediately and visit her site and her blog. See? Pretty amazing.

All you need:
marshmallows
black gourmet writer

skewers and/or lollipop sticks

Let marshmallows sit at room temperature for a couple hours to stiffen a bit, skewer and draw faces.

What’s going on…

Do you ever get a strong urge to write / blog but once the blank page is sitting in front of you…. nothing? Yep, that’s where I am right now. I want to blog, but I can’t think of anything to talk about. So… here’s what’s going on in my life right now:
1. Presentation in class tomorrow – just have to add some finishing touches & read a bit of background info..
2. Halloween costume party tomorrow – the only thing I’m missing for my costume is some black hair dye. I’m actually really looking forward to getting dressed up (since it’s been 3 years since I last did) – it should be a lot of fun!
3. I have to submit an application for a holiday craft show by Monday. I actually have to submit photos since it’s juried. Yikes! I’m going to send the photo I posted yesterday for Wordless Wednesday, plus a few more. What do you think of these?

I’m not sure if I’ll send one or both of those (or maybe neither?). I want to send a better photo of a beaded ornament (taken in my light box) and a picture of a Christmas paper globe hanging.

Since there’s lots of jewelry & tags in my shops, I don’t want to send too many pictures of those, but I don’t have a necklace like this one posted (but would have a few to sell).
NERVOUS! But it should be fun. Hopefully It’ll be more successful for me than the last one!
4. Apparently dilutions are complicated… Even after having to do dilutions by half and by half log in the lab exercise I TA, some of the students didn’t know the difference between the 2 in the quiz I gave. But I do love marking & giving feedback.
5. I need to start exercising again. I never used to until last spring when I started the 30 day challenge … it lasted all summer, but once I got busy with that craft show & school, I dropped it. Well, that and I got bored with it. I need to get a new DVD routine. But I really need to start again. NEED to. Would be right now if I hadn’t eaten lunch an hour ago.
6. OK, that last sentence was probably a lie. I wouldn’t be right now even if I hadn’t eaten an hour ago… but I SHOULD.
7. I need to start listing way more Christmas items. And get started on the gifts I want to make for my grandparents…
8. I have a 10 page paper to write on endometriosis for November 20. I have 3 papers read for it…. I need to get cracking!
9. That probably isn’t all… but that’s all I can remember for now!

Same but Different

I have been really enjoying working with needle felt both with machine and by hand but I do love the effects that can only really be achieved with wet felting.
I decided to make up a small piece of wet felt with a very random sky and colourful landscape.
The idea was to carry on with my cottage and sheep theme but move it on a bit and make the end results a bit different.

I wanted to make my cottage a little more three dimensional so I’ve put it at an angle instead of face on.

Then I added a bit of shading here and there and some basic machine stitching just to define some areas.

After I’d added the sheep I felt it needed something in the foreground and so tried my hand at a bit of drystane dyking. I had to get my hand carders out and mix up a bit of grey wool for the stones. The free machine stitching around the stones adds to the three dimensional effect. I did loose a bit of that lovely foreground colour but I think the wall really works.

So here is the finished piece! All framed and ready to go.

Item of the day: Once Bitten

Ever since high school, I’ve been obsessed with Anne Rice (well, her books anyway). I love her vampire chronicles & Lestat is my absolute favourite. He’s a real vampire – not like that Edward fellow & all these crappy new series (sorry Twilight fans, I’m way biased – besides Anne Rice actually write for adults).
Anyway, in high school, I bought a sweet black velvet cape & some teeth (only the 2 fangs, not a whole set of teeth) & went as Lestat. I looked awesomely freaky. So, ever since, a vampire has been my go-to Halloween costume. I actually don’t usually dress up unless friends convince me to go to a costume party. Happened once in undergrad (I went as a vampire) and it’s happened again this year. So… I’ll be a vampire! Easy.
But Pat’ll be there too this year … and he doesn’t have a creative bone in his body. He has no costume (& doesn’t appear to be thinking of getting one). We’re running out of time – the party is Friday. So he’ll probably just go as my “victim”. I wonder if I could convince him to wear a necklace like this sweet one from Jenifersfamilyjewels…?

October Update

October has possibly been the busiest month of the year so far. I have been making so many new things these last few weeks and running here and there with stock for shops and the Craft Fair that it is amazing that I have anything left to put in my Online shops.

I’ve spent a bit of time today making some pieces available through my Folksy Shop though. Not the best day for taking photos with it being so dull but I tried my best.

Among the new items are these Bookmarks.
All £4.95 each

Each Bookmark comes tacked onto a display card making it a nice little gift.

I will make some more of the Treble Clef design in different colours suitable for giving to men.

I’m also offering a set of four cards for £10 including p+p.
My cards usually sell for £3 each so snap these up while they are on offer.

I also have a baby card available. Ideal for buying in advance as it is suitable for a boy or a girl.

£4.95

So after being such a busy bee over the last few weeks, I have come to a stand still. I just don’t know what to make next. I probably have to start all over again and build up a stock of cards and sea themed pictures for the shops but I’d love to take some time out and just experiment. There are so many materials and techniques to explore.

My Mum brought me this fibre back from Orkney in May and I haven’t even opened it yet!

It’s a funny thing when your hobby becomes your work and you then have to find time for yourself again. But I have plenty of ideas to be working on during these long dark nights that have arrived…..it’s just getting started again that’s the tricky part. Does anyone else find that after a big tidy up they have no idea where anything is? I need a studio…………….
